DECivil Professors visit Escola Secundária Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho

Two DECivil Professors visited Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho Secondary School, in Lisbon, on March 21th.

Professor Carlos Tiago presented various aspects of civil engineering to an audience of 50 students, answering questions such as “What do civil engineers do?” and pointing out the future challenges that today's society faces, such as population growth, resilience to natural disasters, adaptation to climate change and the sustainability of the built environment.

Professor Luís Guerreiro then demonstrated the effect caused in reduced models of two buildings due to accelerations at their base using a portable seismic table. In particular, the effect of base insulation on structural behavior was observed.

DECivil is grateful for the opportunity it had to visit Escola Secundária Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho, particularly to Professor Teresa Moreira, with whom all the details of the visit were organized.
