About DECivil

The Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment (DECivil) is one of the founding departments of Instituto Superior Técnico and one of the largest.

DECivil has approximately 118 teaching staff and 1500 bachelor and master students (14% international), in three main areas: (i) Civil Engineering, (ii) Architecture; and (iii) Environment. DECivil also has 250 doctoral students, in a very exciting and diverse environment.

The study programmes offered by DECivil were designed to combine solid and comprehensive education, strongly based on experimental teaching, developed in well-equipped laboratories in different areas, with an excellent practical training. The students of DECivil are provided with training adjusted to the needs of the contemporary market, being highly adaptable throughout their working lives, which results in a high degree of qualified employment upon completion of the degree. 

DECivil also actively promotes and encourages the participation of its students in international exchange programs (Erasmus, Athens, Smile, etc). 

DECivil's teaching programs have been recognized nationally and internationally, as attested by the outstanding positions in various academic rankings: Civil Engineering - 3^nd (Europe) in the NTU Taiwan Ranking 2023 and 7^th (Europe) in the Shanghai Ranking 2023. In both rankings, it appears as the first institution at national level.

Aware of the quality of its degrees and the recognition by the market of the excellent training it provides, DECivil is aware of the global challenges and the expansion of the geographic space were the professional competition of its students will play a role. In this sense, at the beginning of the 2021/2022 academic year, DECivil launched a new teaching and learning model that intends to ensure a better performance of the learning process, greater competence and confidence in the formulation of problems and a better capacity to manage processes and teams.
