Inaugural Lecture by Professor Gabriel Valença reflects on the complexity of changing urban space

On January 16, from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, the Inaugural Lecture by Professor Gabriel Valença will take place in Room 4.41 at DECivil.
Titled “The Complexity of Changing Urban Space”, the seminar addresses the challenges associated with the reallocation of urban space, particularly in the transition from car-oriented street designs to more sustainable modes of mobility. The session will present findings from recent research that employs emerging analytical tools to better understand the conditions under which street space reallocation becomes especially complex.
Cases in which street interventions have faced limited public acceptance or political and social backlash will be examined, along with an exploration of how preferences for different types of interventions vary across population groups. The seminar will also discuss the multifaceted and dynamic nature of urban space, whose uses and perceptions change over time and throughout the day.
Finally, the role of new technologies in enabling more responsive and adaptive management of urban space will be considered, aligning its use with changing demand patterns and public policy objectives.
This Inaugural Lecture offers a valuable opportunity for reflection for the academic community, particularly those interested in urban planning, mobility, urban design, and sustainability.
