“Explain It to Me Like I’m 5”: Professor Filipa Ferreira explains the urban water cycle

As part of the programme “Explain It to Me Like I’m 5 – Conversations on Science at Técnico for Children and Curious Adults”, a session dedicated to the urban water cycle will take place on 6 February 2026, at 10:00 am, at the Técnico Congress Centre.

Under the theme “Did you know that in some cities every drop counts… while in others all the drops are lost?”, the session invites participants to discover the journey of water in a city — from its source, treatment and distribution, to drainage, reuse and its return to nature. Topics such as access to drinking water, global water challenges, and the importance of sustainability in managing this essential resource will also be addressed.

The talk will be led by Filipa Ferreira, Professor at Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment Department and researcher at CERIS – Research and Innovation in Civil Engineering for Sustainability, who will guide children and curious adults through these issues in an accessible, interactive and inspiring way.

The programme “Explain It to Me Like I’m 5” aims to bring the science developed at the Instituto Superior Técnico closer to younger audiences, fostering curiosity, dialogue and direct contact with researchers. Although primarily aimed at children, adults are also welcome — if the children allow it.
